Varieties of long and thin eggplants

Choosing a variety of eggplants for planting, gardeners, first of all, are guided by its taste and for what they are going to use the fruit. In order to grow a versatile crop, suitable for roasting, baking and canning, try growing varieties with long fruits. They are tender and pleasant to the taste, the skin does not have a characteristic bitterness, and the last hybrids, bred by breeders, are not only well preserved, but also frozen.

Growing long eggplants

Planting and cultivation of long varieties only slightly, but still differs from the usual. These plants are thermophilic and love planting in open soil in a warm period of time. But before you pick a place to transfer seedlings, you need to consider a few points.

If you are planting seedlings in the ground after root crops and melons - the earth must be loosened and fertilized. To do this, 10 kg of plant and animal humus add 50-60 grams of superphosphate and 10-15 grams of potassium. Fertilizer is applied to the soil in late autumn, when the roots and melons are removed and work on soil loosening for the winter begins.

Attention! Remember that eggplant seedlings should be planted in a new place every time. Return the plant in the area of the garden, where it has grown can be no earlier than 3-4 years.

Before transferring the seedlings of long eggplants to open ground or greenhouse, harrowing is necessary in the spring. These works are carried out in the middle or end of March, when the soil is completely dry from the snow. In April, in those places where there will be beds with eggplants, enter urea (nitrogen fertilizer).

Growing seedlings from seed

A long variety of eggplant, as well as the usual, can be grown from seeds. Planting material before sowing is calibrated and disinfected. For the selection of healthy seeds, it is necessary to immerse all planting material in saline. After 3 minutes, full-bodied seeds will sink to the bottom, and the hollow float. Selected grains are washed several times with warm running water, and then dried at room temperature, spreading them on a cotton napkin.

The seeds of a long variety before planting in the ground must be germinated. To do this, pour out the calibrated planting material in a shallow dish or saucer, cover with a layer of filtered paper moistened with a growth stimulator. A plate with seeds must be put in a warm place. After 3-5 days, they should roll.

In the greenhouse

If you are going to grow seedlings in a greenhouse or greenhouse - the substrate for seedlings must be prepared in advance. For this, the soil is covered with a thick layer of manure (10-20 cm) and left for 2-3 weeks. In early March, planting material can be sown in such soil. In addition, all wooden parts of a greenhouse or greenhouse are treated with a 10% solution of bleach or fresh lime.

Important! Well calculate the time of planting seeds for seedlings. From the moment of the first shoots to the transfer of seedlings of long varieties of eggplant in open ground should take at least 2 months.

The temperature in the greenhouse during the growth of seedlings support in the range of 23-250C. As long as the seedlings are in the greenhouse, the temperature is regulated as follows:

  • Happy - 18-200WITH;
  • At night - 12-160WITH.

Experienced gardeners know how important it is to maintain a strong eggplant root system during the transplant process, so growing seedlings in a greenhouse or greenhouse is considered optimal for obtaining healthy and disease-resistant plants.

In landing containers

To get a tasty and rich harvest planting material of long varieties of eggplants is planted in humus and peat planting containers. The substrate for seedlings prepared from the calculation of:

  • Humus - 8 parts;
  • Sodland - 2 parts;
  • Korovyak - 1 part.

All components are thoroughly mixed and allowed to stand for 1-2 days. Then 50 grams of superphosphate, 10 grams of urea, and 5 grams of potassium are added to 1 bucket of the resulting substrate. The resulting primer is filled into containers so that it takes up 2/3 of its volume. Planted seeds are planted in it and sprinkled with a layer of soil of 1 cm. Seedlings are watered in the morning, once a day, and after a few days as necessary, fresh soil is poured into pots.

As soon as the seedlings of the long eggplant are grown, strengthened and ready for transfer to the garden bed, the soil of the open ground is prepared for planting. To do this, it is fertilized with any superphosphate fertilizer at the rate of 250 g per 1 m.2.

How to grow eggplant seedlings "Long purple"

Of all the long varieties of eggplant variety "Purple Long" is the most famous in the territory of central Russia. Consider growing seedlings of long eggplants on the example of this variety.

First of all, it should be said that all long eggplants need regular feeding. This applies to seedlings and the plant itself, up to the full maturity of the crop.

For seedlings varieties "Long purple" use the following fertilizer (per 1 bucket of water):

  • Potassium salt 15-20 g;
  • Ammonium sulfate - 20-25 gr.

Among organic fertilizers, when growing long eggplants, gardeners use slurry, bird droppings and mullein. At the same time, bird droppings or mullein before fermentation start are preliminarily fermented in bulk container for 7-8 days. The resulting mass is diluted with water, in the ratio:

  1. One part of bird droppings on 15 parts of water;
  2. One part of mullein 5 parts of water;
  3. One part of the slurry into 3 parts of water.

Young seedlings of long varieties of eggplant are recommended to feed, alternating organic and nitrogen fertilizers.

The first time seedlings are fertilized in 7-10 days after the first shoots appear, the second one is carried out in another 10 days.

Important! After each feeding procedure, young eggplants must be watered with clean, settled water.

Two weeks before transplanting varieties of "Long Purple" in the ground, the seedlings need to be hardened. If you grow seedlings in a greenhouse, then the frame is opened first for 1-2 hours, and then, gradually increasing the time, bring hardening up to 8-10 hours per day. It is very important to take into account the air temperature. If spring is late and the temperature barely reaches 10-12 in the afternoon0C, hardening time needs to be reduced.

2-3 days before transferring the seedlings, be sure to treat the eggplant with a solution of copper sulfate (50 grams of substance are taken on a bucket of water). This will prevent the possible development of fungal diseases.

In the open ground, the Long Purple variety is planted only when the seedling is fully grown and has at least 5-6 full-fledged leaves.

Attention! Remember the timing of the transfer of seedlings! If you keep eggplant seedlings in a greenhouse for at least 5-7 days, this will significantly affect the growing season and the amount of harvest.
