Chinese gladiolus: photo, fit and care

Chinese, or Japanese gladiolus, also known as montbretias or crocosmia, is a beautiful and unpretentious plant that will adorn any garden. The main advantage of this unusual plant is that it blooms from early summer to late autumn, depending on the variety. The variety of shades is also impressive. Crocosmia can bloom bright scarlet, yellow or orange flowers. However, in order for gladiolus to get accustomed well and to please with its unusual appearance, it is necessary to plant it, observing certain rules. The same applies to care.

The homeland of Crocosmia is not in China at all, but in South Africa. The plant belongs to the family of iris. "Crocosmia" in Greek means "saffron smell", because its dry flowers smell of this noble spice. A garden Chinese gladiolus was bred by Lemoine - a breeder from France. Sometimes the plant is called Chinese gladiolus.

For Japanese gladiolus, star-funnel-shaped flowers, collected in the form of multi-colored spikelets, are characteristic. Crocosmia looks great not only in the garden, but also in the cut form. Flowers can stand in a vase, without losing their charm, up to two weeks. Crocosmia looks great in combination with a sprig of asparagus. Unusual and original winter bouquets of dried montbretias.

Breeding methods

There are two standard methods for breeding montbretias.

  • Seeds.
  • Bulbs.

Sow the seeds in February-March, putting the pots in a well-lit place. By May, the Crocosmia is growing up, and it can be planted on a garden bed with a lump of soil, in order to get acclimatized. If you are going to plant crocosmia in pots, then this can be done in the month of April. Naturally, gladioli from seeds will not bloom immediately. Flowers appear in the second or third year.

Immediately before planting the bulb in the soil, it is necessary to stand for 2-3 days in a warm room. Approximately 2 hours before planting, the bulbs should be kept in a pale pink solution of potassium permanganate. Planting depth is 5 cm.

The bulbs are planted at intervals of 10 to 12 cm. In order to get the flowers faster, plant potted plants.

Important! If you land several varieties of crocosmia on the site, be sure to maintain a distance to avoid over-pollination.

Japanese gladiolus grows well in illuminated areas with low groundwater. It is important that rainwater does not stagnate at the site. If you plant a montrection in a poorly lit area, it may not bloom.

How to grow gladiolus

Chinese crocosmia does not need frequent watering. After watering or rain, the soil must be weeded and loosened. Nitrogen fertilizers accelerate the growth of Japanese gladiolus. In the summer, you can use a solution of mullein in the ratio of one to ten. Organic fertilizers can be used in parallel with potash mineral supplements.

In late autumn, when the gladiolus is completely fading, the stem must be completely cut. This is done for better ripening of the bulbs. This measure helps corms to successfully move the winter in the soil. If the region has a harsh climate, then the bulbs need to dig up closer to the onset of winter cold.

Planting material is stored at a temperature not higher than 10 degrees, preventing drying. The corms are well kept in a wooden box with sawdust. Just first you need to check that the sawdust was not hit by the wood borer. To prevent the bulbs from drying out, they are first moistened with a spray bottle. In warmer climates, bulbs overwinter in soil as well. If, according to forecasts, winter is coming cold, then the tubers are covered with a 20-centimeter layer of leaves, and on top of them - with polyethylene. This protects the bulbs from freezing the soil. In the spring, all that remains is to remove the film and scrape the leaves.

Important! For good reproduction of montbretsii, it is useful to dig out the bulbs every 2-3 years. If you do not do this, the plant will turn out to be too thick and it will be worse to bloom.

The plant is resistant to diseases, it is easy to grow it, but pests like thrips and bears are dangerous to it. Therefore, if you want to have beautiful, healthy and intact plants on the plot, destroy them.

Review of common varieties

The most popular varieties of crocosmia are as follows:

Ornamental plants with flowers of a brownish-orange shade, collected in a symmetric ear. In the center of the petals there are spots of red. Plant height is 60 cm. Late gladiolus blooms.

Norwich canary

60 cm plant with yellow buds.

"Star of the East"

This variety is considered to be one of the most popular among montbretias, because of unusually large and beautiful flowers. Bud orange color, has a stellate shape. Its diameter is about 10 cm. The plant is tall. Its height is about 1.0 m.

This variety is considered to be the most striking. The flowers are very beautiful, bright scarlet. The plant is tall (it so happens that it grew about 1.5 m), with a steady upright stem.

Panic Crocosmia

The variety is distinguished by early flowering (the first flowers appear in the month of June). The plant blooms very abundantly, flowers bright orange shade.

Montbrecia is an extraordinarily beautiful plant. By its attractiveness, it competes even with gladiolus, since, unlike him, it is very unpretentious when grown. Chinese gladiolus looks great with other plants: cannes, dahlias, daylilies, echinacea. Looks great group of tall Chinese gladioli against the lawn, planted with stunted plants. When choosing plants for planting, pay attention to their height. With the right care extraordinarily beautiful flowers will delight you for a long time.
